The Welsh Mule Sheep Breeders Association’s September sales proved to be generally satisfactory for both vendors and buyers with steady demand throughout for the good commercial sheep forward for sale.

At Welshpool on 7th Sept, yearling prices increased by £9 on 2010 to an average of £141 with H & E Powell, LLwyngwilym, Rhayader topping the market at £188 with a pen sold to Williams, Nant Y Geifr, Llanidloes. Ewe lambs also sold well on the following day with the average price of £95 being the same as 2010 and D Williams, Carnedd, Caersws achieving the best price of £152 for a pen bought by TE Davies, Birchen House, Trefeglwys. E & SM Hughes, High Park Farm’s entry was the winner of the Ewe Lamb Competition.

Momentum was carried to Builth Wells on 9th Sept where yearlings were selling particularly well, increasing by £14 on the previous year to £145 on average with H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym, Rhayader again achieving the highest price for a pen of yearlings sold to DJ Lloyd & Co, Cefn Barrach for £206. DIL & E Jones, Llanilltyd, Libanus’ ewe lamb championship winning pen topped prices for ewe lambs at £159 when bought by JL Robbins, Middle Farm, Chipping Camden while the sale average for ewe lambs at £97 was £3 up on 2010.

The final sale of the week at Ruthin saw yearlings selling for an average of £135, up by £4 with RD & CE Davies, Ty Canol, Llanfair TH’s pen that won the Keith Evans Memorial Award’s for the best yearling ewes achieving the highest price of £175 when sold to Morris, New Sontley, Wrexham. Ewe lambs prices fell back slightly on 2010 to an average of £90, but, with a substantially increased entry, that could have been anticipated. GP Williams & Co, Bryn Dansi, Dolwen won the ewe lamb competition and received further reward by getting the best price for a pen of ewe lambs of £116 from H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym, Rhayader.

Overall, association member sold 28,000 sheep during the week, up by 500 on 2010 and chairman Brian Roberts, Stingwern, Brooks felt that most vendors and buyers had been pleased. “Stable prices for finished lambs are helping to bring confidence back to the industry” said Mr Roberts. “Welsh Mule producers work very hard to satisfy demand and we are confident that buyers will have bought sheep of the highest quality at our sales”.
